Explore the places of art and culture which emphasise the concept of bright and beautiful

Colours always have a significance in the number of emotions it brings out of people, and the different range of colours help emote the different set of emotion. There are plenty of such good locations across the globe which is renowned for their historic and artistic culture.

Brazil is widely knownfor its Carnival. Another dance and music festival such as Parintinsboi-Bumba festival is the exquisite amalgamation of folklore, floats and the feathers.  The PARITINES FLOAT FACTORYwill give good insight and behind the scenes look at this cultural event in the Amazon town of a river port.

Charleston, SC is deeply embedded in the culture of USA and has several historical and architectural places and is preserved in the best manner possible. One of the examples of such example of beautifully preserved locations is the RAINBOW ROW IN CHARLESTON SCwhich is specifically named because of the total of thirteen Georgian row houses on the East Bay Street. This section of the historic town is quite picturesque and has earned its reputation as all the houses are painted in pastel colours.

The 10 Commandments of Travel

I. THOU SHALT BEWARE OF BARGAINS.

If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Some unsavory merchants around the world are licking their chops awaiting the arrival of naïve tourists. A ‘Louis Vuitton ’purse is not always a Louis Vuitton purse…a ‘Hermes’ scarf is not always a Hermes scarf…and a ‘Rolex’ watch is not always a Rolex watch.  It is not often you will find an honest merchant like the one I met in Ephesus who promises that his watches are fake.

Kentucky Distilled: National Bourbon Heritage Month

Sample the spirit of Kentucky during September…National Bourbon Heritage Month.  Throughout the United States, the month of September marks the annual celebration of bourbon as America's "Native Spirit".

On August 2, 2007, the US Senate declared September as "National Bourbon Heritage Month."  The bill, sponsored by the late Kentucky Senator and Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher Jim Bunning, passed by unanimous consent.  The bill reinforces the 1964 Act of Congress that declared bourbon "America's Native Spirit" by celebrating the family heritage, tradition and deep-rooted legacy that the bourbon industry contributes to the United States.  And, what better way to savor the ultimate bourbon experience than on a trip to Kentucky?

Helsinki, Finland: Finntastic!

Helsinki, Finland: Finntastic!

Tervetuloa Helsinkiin. (Welcome to Helsinki.)
Helsinki, located on the southern coast of Finland (called Suomi by the Finns), has had more than its share of press since the Helsinki Summit.    However, prior to its recent political exposure, this handsome "White City of the North" has long been an under-the-radar destination.  Nevertheless, it is one city that is truly worth getting to know.

Helsinki lies very close to 60° North Latitude.  This explains its abundance of light in summer months and the fact that around June 22, the night lasts about 1 hour 20 minutes.   Finland's unique culture and way of life can be attributed to its geographic location sandwiched between East and West.  For more than half a millennium, Finland was part of Sweden. After which time the Grand Duchy of Finland was established within the Russian Empire.

A CAFE UNDER THE MIDNIGHT SUN

Finns that you meet on a visit to Helsinki might appear to be reserved but looks can be deceiving.  Finns like to have fun.  Finland has a reputation for its rather wacky events such as a wife-carrying contest, mobile phone throwing competitions, and mosquito swatting events.  Helsinki also created a wacky, welcoming “buzz” the year of the talking trash bins.  Not only did the trash bins introduce you to the Finnish language, but they also played a musical thank you when you deposited your trash in them. During that time, the talking trash bins were placed near four of the most visited attractions in Helsinki: Sibelius Monument, Senate Square, Pohjoisesplanadi (the Esplanade) and Temppeliaukio Church (the Rock Church).

The Sibelius Monument, honoring Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, was unveiled in 1967.  It is composed of 527 silver steel pipes. To some viewers, it is reminiscent of organ pipes and Sibelius's beloved birch trees.    To others, its silvery pipes “reflect the change of season and light, echoing birds' song, sighing in the sea breeze and resonating furiously during a storm”.  A bust of the composer sits on a nearby wall. Located in Sibelius Park, the monument site is a place for strolling, resting on nearby benches, or posing for pictures beneath the tubes.

THE SIBELIUS MONUMENT

The heart of Helsinki beats around Senate Square with its Government Palace, National Library of Finland, (the main building of the University of Helsinki) and the elegant Lutheran Cathedral.  The buildings were designed by Carl Ludwig Engel between 1822 and 1852.  Nearby is the colorful Market Square.

THE LUTHERAN CATHEDRAL IS FRONTED BY A STATUE OF EMPEROR ALEXANDER II OF RUSSIA

Pohjoisesplanadi is translated into the easily pronounceable Esplanade or Espa.  This tree-lined boulevard stretches from the colorful Market Square, with its famous bronze Havis Amanda Fountain, to the Swedish Theater on Mannerheimintie Street. This showcase of Finnish design serves as a promenade and a place to relax.

THE ESPLANADE IS A PROMENADE GREAT FOR PEOPLE-WATCHING

The Temppeliaukio Church ("The Rock Church") is an architectural gem (completed in 1969) that was carved from solid Finnish granite.  The architects chose a rocky outcrop rising about 40 feet above street level, and blasted out the walls from the inside. A copper dome, the only part of the structure that is visible from the street, looks as if a flying saucer has landed in the midst of a quiet residential neighborhood.  The interior ceiling of the dome, woven of copper strips, is connected to the raw rock wall by 180 vertical windows.  The Rock Church is a popular venue for concerts.

ENTRANCE TO THE COPPER-DOMED ROCK CHURCH

Check out the 1919 granite Central Railway Station, one of the best known symbols of Helsinki and considered the most important work of Eliel Saarinen.  Its style represents the transition from National Romanticism to Functionalism. Two pairs of statues, on either side of the main entrance, hold spherical lamps that are lit at night-time.  In 2013, Helsinki Central was chosen as one of the world's most beautiful railway stations.

SAARINEN’S 1919 CENTRAL STATION

The 1990s saw the addition of two architectural gems in Helsinki.  Kiasma, the contemporary art museum, aims at expanding and exploring an understanding of contemporary art.   The Finnish National Opera (1993) offers a modern setting for opera and ballet. It is linked with the City Theatre and Alvar Aalto's Finlandia Hall.  In front of the Olympic Stadium, a most significant example of Finnish functionalism, is a statue of Paavo Nurmi.  Nurmi was Finland's most successful Olympic runner.

PAAVO NURMI, FOREVER YOUNG, RUNS IN FRONT OF THE OLYMPIC STADIUM

On February 1, 2012, the year in which Helsinki was crowned the 2012 World Design Capital, the Kamppi Chapel (known as the "Chapel of Silence") was completed on Narinkka Square in central Helsinki.  The curved, windowless, wood-clad chapel soaring skyward like a humongous salad bowl, became popular immediately. The chapel welcomes everyone irrespective of religion, philosophy of life or background.  It is a place, in one of Finland's most lively urban spaces, where anyone can come to calm down and have a moment of silence.

Be sure to leave some time for shopping in Helsinki!  The one place where you can satisfy all your Finnish shopping needs is the aforementioned street with the tongue-twisting name of Pohjoisesplanadi.  Translated into the easily pronounceable Esplanade or Espa, this tree-lined boulevard stretching from the open market (at the South Harbor) to the Swedish Theater (on Mannerheimintie Street) is a showcase of Finnish design.

FAMOUS HAVIS AMANDA FOUNTAIN AT MARKET SQUARE

The question you will want to ask before you shop in Helsinki is: Kuinka paljon se maksaa?  (How much does it cost?)   The answer you will find is ‘Plenty’! However, you will be assured of fine merchandise. The potpourri of shops on the Esplanade offers fine merchandise known for its elegant simplicity, functionality, and quality.  Finnish design reflects the characteristics of its people. Like the Finns themselves, their products reveal an affinity to nature.  Finland is a land with millions of forests and billions of trees.  In Finland they carve the wood with their hands and create a form with original Finnish spirit.   Check out the following shops on the Esplanade.

Finnish birch bead rams residing on the shelves of the Aarikka shop are said to sing the song of Finnish wood design.  In Finland, they call that form Aarikka.  For over half a century, Aarikka has done fascinating things with wood.  The delicious smell of Finnish pine and birch assaults the senses of shoppers as they enter the shop renowned for those adorable wooden ram sculptures. Pässi the ram is Aarikka’s most famous sculpture series.

THE RAM IS AARIKKA’S MOST FAMOUS SCULPTURE SERIES

Marimekko is a way of dressing…timelessly unique, simple and elegant.   Marimekko, which means 'Mary's simple dress', is a shop for people who associate quality of design with quality of life.  Founded in 1951, the heart and soul of Marimekko's designs are the bold prints and colors that come to life in the approximate one-million meters of fabric that are printed at their factory every year. Marimekko bears the banner of Finnish design all over the world.

MARIMEKKO IS A BOLD AND COLORFUL WAY OF DRESSING

Yes, iittala, the shop selling timeless design that will never be thrown away, begins its spelling with a lower case 'i'.  A small white 'i', in a tiny red dot, marks the sign of faultless glassware designed by renowned Finnish designers such as Tapio Wirkkala and Alvar Aalto.  Alvar Aalto's 1936 creation of his now famous Savoy Vase was the beginning of what has become known as "original Finnish glass design".  Today, that same Aalto vase, which can be seen in museums around the world, is still one of the most characteristic designs of iittala glasswork.

AALTO’S  SAVOY VASE COMES IN ALL SIZES AND COLORS

Helsinki, the capital city of this “Land of Light and Water” lies very close to 60° North Latitude.  This explains its abundance of light in summer months and the fact that around June 22, the night lasts about 1 hour 20 minutes.  Although Helsinki is particularly wonderful during its bright summer months, it is a city for all seasons… a place to shop…a place to stroll…a place to dine.  It’s a Sibelius symphony…a steaming sauna (pronounced sow-nah)…and a midnight sun.

It’s Finntastic!

Cool Pools: From Here to Infinity

Cool Pools: From Here to Infinity

Cool it!  As summer’s thermostat reaches OMG numbers, it’s time to hang out by the pool.  Forget ye ole swimming hole and head for the most beautiful pool ever…the infinity pool.
'What in the world', you may ask, 'is an infinity pool?'  Infinity has been defined as a quality of having no limits or end, something that makes the line between man and Mother Nature’s handiwork seem fuzzy.  The vanishing edge swimming pool…water with no boundary…the infinity pool…seamlessly merges the pool’s water into another body of water.

INFINITY POOL IN ARUBA MERGES WATER INTO WATER

In a classic 1953 movie, Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr’s famous ocean-side kiss scene took you “From Here to Eternity”.  Hop aboard the magic carpet of travel and let me swoop you off from here to infinity’.
ISTANBUL, TURKEY:  Formerly known as Constantinople, this city even had a gold record song written about its name change.  "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" is a 1953 novelty song written on the 500th anniversary of the fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans.   The lyrics humorously refer to the official 1930 renaming of the city of Constantinople to Istanbul. If you are wondering why they changed the name, the song explains it in these words: “Why they changed it I can't say…People just liked it better that way…Why did Constantinople get the works?...That's nobody's business but the Turks.”
Istanbul is the only city in the world that straddles two continents (Europe and Asia) and is embraced by two seas (Aegean and Black) and the connecting Bosporus Strait. The regal Ciragan Palace Hotel, situated on the European shores of the Bosphorus and overlooking the ancient city of Istanbul, allows one to fantasize about the luxury and glamour of living in a genuine Ottoman Palace.

CIRAGAN PALACE ISTANBUL

With its splendid style, superb location, fascinating view, and resort ambiance, the hotel gives its guests an unforgettable stay in an enchanting, mystical city where East meets West, Europe meets Asia, and the past meets the present.  The Ciragan Palace Hotel’s infinity swimming pool, heated year-round, appears to overflow into the Bosphorus.

CIRAGAN PALACE INFINITY POOL
LUCIA, WEST INDIES: A silly riddle might challenge your brain with the question:  What’s black and white and green all over?  The answer is quite simply St. Lucia (pronounced St. Loo-sha)...the stunningly beautiful Windward Island with both black volcanic and white sand beaches, back-dropped by lush green mountains.
In the town of Soufriere, a 1.5 hour drive from St. Lucia's capital city of Castries, is the simmering Soufriere Sulphur Springs Volcano. Although there has not been any volcanic activity occurring here for 400,000 years, the resultant cavity from the collapsed dome of molten lava has formed the world’s only drive-through volcano.  The volcano’s moonscape-like pit, with 24 steaming vents bubbling up smelly sulphuric smoke, was quite a contrast to what was to follow.  Minutes away from Sulphur Springs, is Ladera Resort, an intimate tropical gem that is world acclaimed, yet relatively unknown.

ST LUCIA’S LADERA RESORT

Taking full advantage of its spectacular natural surroundings, each of Ladera’s villas has only three walls.  The absence of the fourth wall brings an astounding view of the conical twin peaks of the Pitons, and the rugged coastline below, right into your villa.  And what better place to enjoy the view than from an old-fashioned swing hanging above your own private plunge pool?

LADERA’S 3-WALLED VILLAS HAVE PRIVATE INFINITY PLUNGE POOLS

BIG SUR, CALIFORNIA: California's Big Sur coast, where mountains plunge dramatically into the Pacific, is one of the most dramatic meetings of land and sea in the world.  (FYI: The undulating mountainside coastal drive northbound is less of a cliffhanger than the rail-less oceanside trip southbound).  For a luxurious hideaway in this relatively undeveloped and pristine area nothing holds a candle to the Post Ranch Inn.

SERENE AND SECLUDED POST RANCH INN

Each oceanview cottage of this rustic, ranch-style luxury hotel is curved around old trees and strung along the rocky-ridged California cliff. The mountainside treehouses are built on stilts.  If you desire divine isolation, this eco-friendly romantic hideaway is for you.  There are no televisions or alarm clocks in the guest rooms and children are not allowed at the resort.

HEATED  INFINITY POOL AT  POST RANCH INN

BERMUDA: The islands of Bermuda, under a “pink cloud of oleanders”, are an exquisitely delicate watercolor framed by a shimmering turquoise ocean.  Homes painted in pastel colors, and topped with white lime-washed roofs, line the flawless spun-sugar beaches of these breathtakingly beautiful islands. Actually, this 21-square mile area, which we collectively call the island of Bermuda, is a chain of approximately 138 small islands, connected by causeways and bridges.   Contrary to common errors, Bermuda is in the Atlantic Ocean (not the Caribbean), some 650 miles off the coast of North Carolina.  The serene and spectacular Reefs Resort tucked along the island’s celebrated South Shore in Southampton Parish is a classic retreat where boutique sophistication meet coastal style.

FROM OCEANSIDE TO POOLSIDE. HO HUM... ANOTHER DAY IN PARADISE

The Reefs’ salmon-pink cottages stretch out along a pink-flecked sand beach surrounded by palm trees and jutting rocks framed by lush foilage.  Poolside guest rooms overlook an infinity-edge swimming pool and turquoise Atlantic waters. Since each guest room faces west, at no extra charge, you will be treated to a magnificant light show as sunset surrenders to moonrise.

INFINITY POOL AT THE REEFS RESORT BERMUDA

FUNCHAL, MADEIRA, PORTUGAL: The sub-tropical island of Madeira is part of the Portuguese archipelago that hugs the North Atlantic Ocean 400 miles west of North Africa.  This flower-filled island of volcanic origin is a magical meld of Europe and the tropics. With the waters of the Gulf Stream lapping at its shores, Madeira is blessed with a near perfect year-round climate of comfortable summers and mild winters.  The island’s lush, irregularly cut mountains scrape across the sky, while the bays, the beaches, and the cliffs meet the deep blue crystalline sea. The beauty of nature is harmoniously contrasted with the cosmopolitan throb of Funchal, the capital.  Reid’s Palace, Funchal’s Grande Dame, opened in 1891, and has been restored to its original grandeur.

REID’S PALACE, FUNCHAL’S GRANDE DAME

From one of their three luxurious swimming pools you will enjoy stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. Two of the three pools contain seawater, one of which is heated. The third pool is heated with freshwater.  From a sea level platform you can jump straight into the azure Atlantic Ocean.

HEATED INFINITY POOL AT REID’S PALACE

Since approximately 70% of the earth’s surface is covered with water, say hello to summer in an infinity pool.  Remember, wherever you travel…whenever you travel…it’s always summer somewhere. Come on in, the water’s fine!

I Love Markets

I hate to cook, but I love markets!

I don’t know why, or what it is about them, but wherever I am in the world, the marketplace seems to beckon me.  The simplest explanation might just be that it is a magical melding of the 3 C’s…Color, Cacophony and Camaraderie.  And, oh yes, lest we forget number 4…the s-cents!

Grab your virtual shopping bag and let’s go marketing around the world.  I’m sure you will find everything from soap to nuts!  Let’s begin with soap.

MARSEILLES, FRANCE--MARCHE DU PRADO:  Around 600 BC, Greek merchants from Asia Minor founded the port town of Massilia (Marseilles) that is now Marseilles’ bustling Vieux Port (Old Harbor).  The twenty-six centuries that followed have made Marseilles the oldest of the great French cities and the city with the second largest population in France.  Although Marseilles lies at the western end of the Cote d’Azur (French Riviera), do not expect Riviera ritz and glitz.  What you can expect is a vibrant ancient port town that  has become a leading place in theater, sport, and fashion design.

Star-Chitects Build Larger-Than-Life Sculptures
I am often asked, “What is your favorite museum?”  The answer is simple…my favorite museum is the world!
This amazing world that we live in is an open-air museum, filled with fascinating structures created by world-renowned architects.  When traveling around the world, I make it a point to experience as many architectural masterpieces as possible.  They come in a variety of amazing shapes and sizes, from medieval to modern.  Allow me to share with you a few intriguing structures that, in reality, are museum-quality, larger-than-life, sculptures.
MUSEO GUGGENHEIM BILBAO: From a distance, the splendid bizarrely shaped $100-million Guggenheim Museum of Modern Art in Bilbao, Spain looked like a massive steel sculpture. And then, all of a sudden, there it was…renowned architect Frank Gehry's masterpiece in flowing titanium and limestone.  Gehry described his building, on the banks of the Nervion River, as a ship that has run aground.  The museum, which opened in 1997, reflects Bilbao's heritage with its suggestion of maritime shapes and sails.  Others have likened the silhouette of Bilbao’s Guggenheim to a roller coaster, a mermaid, a waterfall a hula girl, and a fish.  The building is covered with over 35,OOO titanium tiles and pieces of glass strategically placed to catch the natural light.  Maman, Louise Bourgeois' huge bronze spider, stands in front of the museum.

MAMAN, A HUGE BRONZE SPIDER, STANDS IN FRONT OF THE MUSEUM

Puppy, Jeff Koon's 1992 stalwart floral sculpture standing guard opposite the museum, is the Guggenheim's mascot. Constructed of stainless steel, soil, flowering plants, and an internal irrigation system, this humongous West Highland White Terrier topiary is literally still growing.

PUPPY, THE GUGGENHEIM'S FLOWER MASCOT

THE BINOCULARS BUILDING: The Main Street facade of this Postmodern commercial building, located in the Venice area of Los Angeles, California incorporates the architectural genius of Frank Gehry with the 1991 public artwork “Giant Binoculars” by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen.  The massive 45-foot high cement and plaster sculpture frames both the pedestrian and vehicle entrances to the building. Gehry turned art into architecture when he decided to use the work of Oldenburg and his wife to connect the two office buildings he was designing.

THE BINOCULARS BUILDING

HOTEL DEL CORONADO: The stretch of Southern California, from Los Angeles to San Diego/Coronado, has been called the American Riviera and the Victorian-style Hotel del Coronado may well be the jewel in its crown.  This National Historic Landmark, a rambling white clapboard legend with red-peaked roof, crimson turrets, and lazy verandas, is said to be “one-third sun, one-third sand, one-third fairy tale”. The Hotel Del Coronado has sheltered international royalty, politicians, Hollywood celebrities, and the rich and famous since 1888.  Ten U.S. presidents, from Benjamin Harrison to Bill Clinton, have visited the Del.  Publisher Rand McNally credits The Del as enjoying “more fame and historical significance than perhaps any hotel in North America”.
In 1958, the Del became the backdrop for the shenanigans of Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, and Joe E. Brown, when they filmed “Some Like It Hot”.  Looking out over the Pacific Ocean from the hotel, one can almost see Marilyn and Tony toasting their champagne flutes as they conned each other on Joe E. Brown’s yacht.

THE HISTORIC “DEL”

LIBRARY OF CELSUS: A 25-minute drive through the Asia Minor countryside from Kusadasi, Turkey (pronounced koo-SHAHD-ah-sea) a lovely town on the Aegean Sea, will bring you to the fabled remains of the ancient city of Ephesus.  Walking along the blazing white marble Arcadian Way, one might envision Charlton Heston gliding through the ancient ruins in his chariot.   Behind a large marble courtyard rises the Library of Celsus, the third largest library in the ancient world. Restorations of this beautifully preserved edifice, adorned with columns and statues, began in 1970 and continued through 1978.  An inauguration ceremony was held on April 29, 1978 and the library was opened to visitors after 1716 years.

THE REICHSTAG
: Berlin Germany’s Reichstag, the seat of Germany’s Parliament, originally opened in 1894.   After the reunification of Germany, the building was fully restored by internationally renowned architect Sir Norman Foster.  Completed in 1999, the restoration features an iconic large glass dome that has a 360-degree view of the surrounding cityscape.  Lunch in the restaurant at the top of the Reichstag is overpriced, but worth it just for the view.  Outside of the Reichstag is a memorial to the 96 Reichstag members of opposition parties killed by the Nazis.

SAGRADA FAMILIA
: Barcelona Spain’s Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Familia was initiated by the world-renowned Catalan architect Antonio Gaudi in 1882 and has not yet been completed. People of all faiths flock to Barcelona to visit this “Church of the Sacred Family” with its surreal spires, said to resemble a melting wedding cake.  Although Gaudi never lived to see his dream come to fruition a group of architects following Gaudi's design, have brought the west facade to an advanced stage of construction. Route Gaudi, an architectural tour of the works of this pioneer in the Modernist Movement of Architecture, also includes Gaudi’s La Pedrera, Casa Batlló, and Parc Guell.

GAUDI’S SAGRADA FAMILIA

Between 1900 and 1904, Gaudi built the surrealistic Parc Guell, an architectural extravaganza that has been compared to Dorothy’s “Oz” and Alice’s “Wonderland”.   The creative magic of this eccentric architect is exemplified in this park where visitors are greeted by a curvy pink house (Casa-Museu Gaudi), a grinning mosaic frog, and a pavilion that is supported by mushroom-like columns.

GAUDI’S CASA-MUSEU GAUDI

FRED AND GINGER: In The Czech Republic City Of Prague, Wenceslas Square (more of a long boulevard than a square) is the location of “Fred and Ginger” (The “Dancing House”) named after the famous dancers Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.  This ultra-contemporary, once-controversial, building, whose twirling twin towers appear to be dancing, was awarded the Best Design of 1996 prize by Time Magazine. Another of architect Frank Gehry’s designs, the swaybacked structure is next to two Art Nouveau houses built by the grandfather of the late Václav Havel who served as the last President of Czechoslovakia from 1989 until the dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1992, and as the first President of the Czech Republic from 1993 to 2003.
Czech it out!
